Instructions is the block of text describing who the agent is and how it works. The agent reads it before every single answer, which makes it the part with the biggest say in how good the agent turns out. Agent instructions

What good Instructions cover

  • Who the agent is - its role and the ground it covers
  • What it can and cannot do - the limits of its abilities, so it never promises something out of reach
  • The order of work - what it does first, what comes after, and when it has to ask
  • Tone and language - how it addresses people, how long its answers run, which language it replies in
  • Hard rules - the things it must never get wrong, such as inventing figures

Write Instructions the way you would write a job description for a new hire: be specific, give examples, spell out the exceptions. Vague wording produces vague answers.
